The Mission of the American School of Santo Domingo Library Media Center is to make available a positive learning environment that promotes information literacy, develops the joy of reading, and provides age-appropriate resources and meaningful learning experiences.

§ Backpacks must be placed on the long shelf provided for backpacks and books.

§ Backpacks are not allowed on study tables or the floor.

§ No food or beverages allowed.

§ E-mail is NOT allowed during class hours.

§ Respect of others is required at all times.

Acceptable Use Policy – Internet

We are pleased to allow students at the school access to the Internet Wireless. To gain access, students must obtain parental permission and must sign and return attached form to the school office.

Student ID Card Required

Internet will allow students to explore thousands of libraries, databases, and bulletin boards. Families must be warned that some materials available via the Internet may be illegal, defamatory, inaccurate or potentially offensive to people. While our intent is to avail our students with access to other educational material in order to further their educational goals and objectives, students may find ways to access other material as well. Nonetheless, we believe the benefits to students from access to the Internet, in the form of information resources and opportunities for collaboration exceed the disadvantages it may have. Ultimately, parents and guardians of minors are responsible for conveying the rules and standards that their children should follow when using media and information sources. The American School of Santo Domingo supports and respects each family’s right to decide whether or not to apply for access.

Expectation of Students

The Internet is provided to students for research.

Access is a privilege – not a right. Internet access means that the student has a responsibility with the school. Use of the school’s computer network implies that the users will comply with school standards.

While this list is not conclusive, it illustrates violations that may result in loss of access, as well as other disciplinary actions:

§ Sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures.

§ Use of obscene language.

§ Harassing, insulting, or attacking others.

§ Damaging computer systems, or computer networks.

§ Violating copyright laws

§ Using another’s password

§ Trespassing into another’s folder, work, or files.

§ Intentionally wasting limited resources.

§ Employing the network for chatting or for commercial purposes.

Circulation and Loans:

§ Students from 2-6 grades can check-out books for an entire week.

§ Students from 7-12 grades can check-out books for two weeks.

§ Parents and teacher can check-out books for two weeks.

§ Periodicals, Magazines and Reference Material (Encyclopedias, Dictionaries, Thesaurus) are available but may not be taken outside the Library.
